The Art of Juliette Woods

"Imbas
The old Irish word for Sacred Poetic Inspiration
A connection, a channeling of the Divine
Dreamtime made manifest
By walking in two worlds simultaneously.
Hallow Bone story painting
Coloured, shaded, and jaded
From the ethers to my soul
Through my mind and down my arm
Sliding through palette to smear on canvas
Picked up by your eyes
Received by your mind
Translated by your Soul
Radiated and returned to the ethers."

Paintings
Some time ago my art shifted from trying to paint a picture in my mind to bringing a feeling, intention, or inquiry to the canvas and letting intuition and spirit bring a story through me. It is a ceremonial way of working and a way to bring our Unseen experiences out into this Seen world. A call and response process of being informed and also informing. It is a way to set intention and bring deeply personal soul tending through our body and into visual form. Ultimately offering us an entirety with just one look. Each line drawn is rich with layered meaning. Every colour filled with purpose. It stretches out beyond the canvas into a living ceremony. The tea we brew, the stones we pile, the way the table is set "just so". Sacred space is set, there is paint that calls to be touched not brushed, journals beckon, and a current to follow. This is a hyperspeed of nearly 24 hours of painting over 2 days as The Ship's Wheel came forward out of the ethers.
I'm staying at the helm. Hands on navigation, feeling the currents of emotional waters and windy thoughts while steering our ship as adeptly as I can. Every bolt turned with love and care. Every swoop calling in an essence. It is not lost on me the resemblance to the medicine wheel, and the wheel of seasonal celebrations, plus so many more personally significant relevances. |

Spirit Dolls
Sometimes beings come through asking for physical form to help bring their medicines into our tangible realm. These spirit dolls are largely created from natural objects such as driftwood, clay, feathers, and shells. Custom Dolls may be available.

Ritual Furniture
Intentionally created and energetically infused with symbols and meaning. Folding tables are a particular favourite of mine, but benches, re-purposed church pews, side tables, nights stands, even bookshelves all have called for repurposing into sacred objects.

"At One with the Land" is an expression of our intimate relationship with the natural world. We are made of the very same elements. We depend on our Earth Mother ~ she gives us all that we need and so very much more. She is a patient, yet firm provider. Humankind has largely fallen out of resonance and has walked away from her in many respects. It is time to reconnect. Time to feel very much a part of nature once again.
In 2010 I created a stop motion film visually exploring much of my spiritual practice at the time and how I was relating to my surroundings. This clip from it features my process creating a painted collage of the land I loved most, out of images of myself. |
Artist bio as featured on CreativEnrichment (2017)
"Juliette Woods has been creating art for as long as she can remember using mediums as varied as crayola crayons, richly coloured tea or coffee, oil paint, clay, leather, photography and digital art. Most of her artistic career has focused on 2 dimensional work, and she has moved from a technical approach to a more expressive one. From a young girl until her 30’s, Juliette’s intention was to hone her skills and create “good art” while filling her soul cup with creative expression. Now ... a shift can been seen as artistic expectations fall away to reveal an experience that can be considered as “channeled art” with freedom to create purely as a means of spiritual connection.
This arrives as paintings full of symbols and markings etched into the paint around whimsical animals, mushrooms, and landscapes, or as intricate colour-filled mandalas that hold specific medicinal intentions for the viewer’s well-being. Juliette has a rich shamanic lifestyle which often involves “walking in two worlds at once”, that is, being very present in our human experience while also informed and influenced by the unseen, natural forces constantly at play.
Long fascinated with the process of transformation that occurs when an artist views or feels an inspiration and how it changes form while being filtered through their mind, body, and into the medium of choice to end up on the canvas as something new – now Juliette transforms and expresses not just what she sees or feels, but as guided to during a state of active meditation.
Juliette also works with children and adults in a remedial way using painting as a means to bring confidence, emotional support, and balance technical successes with freedoms and permissions to personal expression."
